Fresh fish can be bought on a daily basis at the Fisherman's Cooperative down by the marina – alternatively why not try catching your own fish to cook on the barbecue?

The local restaurants are a must – they provide a huge variety of seafood, traditional and vegetable dishes. Try one of the many atmospheric restaurants down by the river just a short walk from the house.

Small shops in the village provide an abundance of fresh fruit and vegetables and fresh bread is available on a daily basis. Akyaka has its own market on a Wednesday opposite the school. Here you will find fresh fruit and vegetables grown by the locals, clothes, rugs, cheese, olives and much more. It's worth investigating just to soak up the atmosphere and to practice your Turkish!

Local buses or dolmuses are abundant and cost just a few lira to use. Buses travel to Mugla and Marmaris on a regular basis. They are fun to use and will give you a good opportunity to mix with the locals and absorb the rich character of these friendly people.

Don't miss out on the following Turkish delicacies. Turkish breakfast consists of olives, jam, honey, bread, cheese and egg. "The village breakfast" (exact translation) served by some local restaurants close to Akyaka add an extra dimension to this and one in particular offers the choice of over 30 different kinds of jam.

"Dolma" is spiced rice rolled in grape leaves served with lemon slices.
"Gozleme" is a very thin pastry filled with whatever you like (beef, cheese, herbs, potato etc.) and cooked on a very thin, large concave pan.
"Pide" is similar to the Gozleme. It is usually stuffed with vegetables, cheese and beef but can also be eaten as a dessert when it is stuffed with sesame and sugar.
"Kebabs" and "syrup desserts" are very classic and of course at the top of the list if you are not on a diet. “
"Baklava” is the traditional Turkish pastry and variations can be found where the filling varies from Pistacio to Almond.

The most popular restaurants are just a minute walk from The Ula House. The restaurants by the river are approximately a ten minute walk away. Taxi's can be booked in advance or for your return from the restaurant.
